At Gray Area Performance, the long-term development of athletes is at the heart of everything we do. For many young performers, every game can feel like the world cup final. As coaches and parents, it is extremely important to look beyond the short-term results and focus on the bigger picture, their overall growth, health and wellbeing, both on and off the field.

Research shows that children naturally place a great deal of pressure on themselves to succeed. Their focus often stays on immediate outcomes rather than the processes and habits that lead to long-term success. That’s why we emphasise athletic development that goes beyond the sport itself, building a strong and robust movement foundation that can handle the demands of training; actively assisting the reduction of risk of sport or growth-related injuries and enhancing their progression.

The focus will be on building a positive atmosphere for learning and development, with enjoyable training that includes progressions and variations in training depending on the individual’s needs.

Additionally, we will prioritise athletic motor skill competencies (AMSC) and strength development to reduce injury and increase performance.

Movement Skills: Building the Foundation

A stable foundation is essential for lifelong athletic success. During this stage, the focus is on building strong movement foundations through fun, engaging activities. Children develop body control with bodyweight exercises, improve their Agility, Balance, Coordination, and Speed (ABCs). Taking part in games that blend movement and sports skills will also enhance teamwork and confidence. Basic resistance training and low-level plyometrics (jumping and landing) are introduced with an emphasis on correct technique, laying the groundwork for injury prevention and future performance. These core movement skills provide the gateway into new training environments and prepare young athletes for more advanced physical challenges.

Athletic Skills: Developing All-Round Qualities

Building better warm ups: Prepare athletes and develop long term abilities - Sportsmith during this stage, athletes progress into structured resistance training, gradually increasing loads, learning key weightlifting movements, and incorporating more advanced plyometrics. Athletic Motor Skill Competencies (AMSCs) play a central role, helping athletes refine movement quality, coordination, and control across a wide range of activities. These are often developed through games that also encourage teamwork and leadership. Speed and agility training becomes more structured but still includes plenty of game-based learning to keep sessions enjoyable. While training remains focused on developing well-rounded athletic qualities rather than sport-specific skills, certain programmes can become more tailored if an athlete is managing a growth-related condition such as Osgood-Schlatter or Severs disease, ensuring safe progression and continued development.

Physical Preparation: Training for Performance

At this stage, training becomes more advanced and individualised, with athletes focusing on developing the physical qualities most relevant to their sport. Programmes may include enhanced resistance training, advanced plyometrics, weightlifting, and structured speed and agility work to target specific adaptations. Athletic Motor Skill Competencies (AMSCs) are further challenged through games and competitions, reinforcing skills developed in earlier training.

Training is organised through periodised programmes that adapt across the year to prepare for key competition phases. For athletes in weekly seasonal sports, this may mean shifting focus between off-season, pre-season, and in-season demands. For those on longer competition cycles, training is carefully planned to peak for fewer but more significant events, such as qualifying rounds or international tournaments. This stage ensures athletes are fully prepared—physically and mentally—to perform at their best when it matters most. While this style of training is traditionally applied to 18+ athletes, our training is always tailored to the individual. We consider factors such as technical competency, physical capacity, maturation, and injury history.
